Leeva is the daughter of the mayor (who only loves fame) and the treasurer (who only loves fortune) and they make her do all the chores but otherwise ignore her。 Leeva wonders what other people are for, and secretly goes out into the town to find out。 She befriends the librarian and her nephew, and two kids Ferb and Osmond。 Leeva realizes how awful her parents are and runs away, sleeping in the library bookdrop with a badger。 Her parents don't realize she is gone。 She finds out that the town has Leeva is the daughter of the mayor (who only loves fame) and the treasurer (who only loves fortune) and they make her do all the chores but otherwise ignore her。 Leeva wonders what other people are for, and secretly goes out into the town to find out。 She befriends the librarian and her nephew, and two kids Ferb and Osmond。 Leeva realizes how awful her parents are and runs away, sleeping in the library bookdrop with a badger。 Her parents don't realize she is gone。 She finds out that the town has paid taxes which her father has kept, so she and her friends conjure a plan to get the money back to the townspeople and institutions。 Harry, the nephew, uses the money for acting school to install an elevator so his aunt can come down from the third floor of the library even with her bad knees, but the Thornblossoms steal the elevator。 Once the institutions get a their money back, a new elevator gets installed in the library。 Fern's grandparents get energy by doing a TV exercise class, so Fern does not have to take care of her siblings, and gets over her stage fright and gets a small but important part in the town play。 Osmond gets over his fear of everything and stops wearing hazmat suits。This reminded me of Roald Dahl titles。 。。。more

A wonderful witty, LOL funny story for both children and adults, fantastic written characters accompanied by great illustrations are only half of the charming things about this delightful story。 I loved reading as a kid especially books as fun as Leeva At Last by Sara Pennypacker Illustrated by Mathew Cordell。 Sometimes it's nice to reconnect with your inner child by reading a story and what a pleasure reading about Leeva & her community was。 A wonderful witty, LOL funny story for both children and adults, fantastic written characters accompanied by great illustrations are only half of the charming things about this delightful story。 I loved reading as a kid especially books as fun as Leeva At Last by Sara Pennypacker Illustrated by Mathew Cordell。 Sometimes it's nice to reconnect with your inner child by reading a story and what a pleasure reading about Leeva & her community was。 。。。more

In the grand tradition of parents/guardians who are ludicrously awful, like the Dursleys and the Wormwoods, the Thornblossoms are egregiously appalling。 Believing that the only value people have is if they can give the Thornblossoms fame (Mayor Thornblossom, Leeva's mother) or money (Town Treasurer Thornblossom, Leeva's father), they see zero value in Leeva and so invest nothing in her。 She works as their unpaid and unfed servant, making her own clothes, furniture, etc。, and is forbidden to leav In the grand tradition of parents/guardians who are ludicrously awful, like the Dursleys and the Wormwoods, the Thornblossoms are egregiously appalling。 Believing that the only value people have is if they can give the Thornblossoms fame (Mayor Thornblossom, Leeva's mother) or money (Town Treasurer Thornblossom, Leeva's father), they see zero value in Leeva and so invest nothing in her。 She works as their unpaid and unfed servant, making her own clothes, furniture, etc。, and is forbidden to leave the property--she isn't even aware that there's a school in her town。 When she does find out, and learns that her parents have always known about the school but never bothered to send her, Leeva has had it。 When they leave for work the next morning, Leeva pushes her way through the hedge around their house and discovers, wonder of wonders, that there's a LIBRARY next door! Instantly Leeva falls in love with the library and its kind, if reluctant temporary librarian, Harry; he's a teenager deputizing for the aunt who raised him, but has injured herself and can't manage the falling-apart library stairs anymore (she was doing an ollie on her skateboard and hit some rough pavement)。 Leeva also falls in love with the aunt, who makes the best cookies ever, and shares! Soon Leeva is running errands for them all around town and meeting all sorts of wonderful people who show her what people are really for--but she also learns that they all loathe her parents。 What would happen if they knew who she really was? What would happen if her parents found out what she was doing? While this was predictable, it was the enjoyable kind of predictable because you were never in any doubt that things would end up well for Leeva。 I hope that readers understand that the Thornblossoms are caricatures not to be taken seriously (so many people take the Dursleys WAY too seriously!), and can enjoy just how awful they are。 Sometimes it's nice to have characters with zero depth and who are exactly who they seem they are, especially villains that you can both loathe and laugh at。 The other characters have more nuance, like poor, paranoid Osgood and put-upon Fern。 And Bob the Badger is a force all on his own! Thoroughly enjoyable。 Recommended for elementary school。 Thanks to Libro。FM for a free educator copy of the audiobook。 。。。more

Review from my daughter Paige (12):A girl whose parents are most hated wants to find herself in the world。Leeva Thornblossom has one of the worst parents on Earth。 Her father, the treasurer, is a greedy man who only cares about gaining more wealth。 Her mother, the mayor, is a literal clout chaser, doing anything to make herself famous。 They make Leeva their servant, forbidding her to go anywhere until Leeva discovers a loophole and finds the town library。 With access to learning information and Review from my daughter Paige (12):A girl whose parents are most hated wants to find herself in the world。Leeva Thornblossom has one of the worst parents on Earth。 Her father, the treasurer, is a greedy man who only cares about gaining more wealth。 Her mother, the mayor, is a literal clout chaser, doing anything to make herself famous。 They make Leeva their servant, forbidding her to go anywhere until Leeva discovers a loophole and finds the town library。 With access to learning information and new friends, Leeva will not let her parents ruin things! This story is well-written, has a good sense of humor, and has a nice touch of quirkiness。I love that the library and the librarians are central to this story。 As one of my happy places is the library, I was delighted that Leeva feels the same。 She is an avid learner and is open to learning many new things, like me。 I knew many of the books she was talking about in the story。 Harry, the acting librarian, is dramatic but a very kindhearted man。 His aunt, the librarian, is sweet and a good baker; she makes delicious cookies。The book has a lot of similarities to Matilda by Roald Dahl。 There were some of the same concepts there, like the parents。 It saddened me that her parents neglected her and were just about money and fame。 But on the bright side, Leeva has incredible friends that will help her throughout the book。The illustrations by Cordell Matthew throughout the book are humorous and well done。The theme of Leeva at Last is to be open to knowledge and change。 I recommend the book to Roald Dahl fans。Thank you at the publisher for sharing this book with me! 。。。more

Leeva can be compared to Matilda or the Pevensies。 She is certainly in the unwanted and ignored children's book category。 She finds her inner bravery and learns there is more to life than the power her mother craves and the money her father loves。 The parents are one-dimensional and nasty as expected。 Leeva finds love and support from new friends and a new family。 The dark humor comes through clearly。 I have loved Pennypacker's other books but this one felt a bit flat and predictable from the st Leeva can be compared to Matilda or the Pevensies。 She is certainly in the unwanted and ignored children's book category。 She finds her inner bravery and learns there is more to life than the power her mother craves and the money her father loves。 The parents are one-dimensional and nasty as expected。 Leeva finds love and support from new friends and a new family。 The dark humor comes through clearly。 I have loved Pennypacker's other books but this one felt a bit flat and predictable from the start。 。。。more
